So....  when are you going to get rid of phpBB and get something decent...
At the very least, install a real captcha (the usual phpBB one is a joke) to prevent things like Anpoterbasup67...

You need a mod or two on here to clear out such a user when this happens...

Again, these bot-posts are getting rediculous...

Don't suppose I could at least have the ability to clean them if you will not update the forums?

Yeah, Phpbb is a joke at deleting spammers... such a pain to log into control panel to ban/delete accounts. At the very least, each post should have an instant ban/delete user account.

I will likely migrate to something else. What forum software do you suggest?

I used phpBB years ago, (version 1), but I'm a mod on some other forums that use version 2, don't like it still.  I tried quite a few others a few years back.  Used IPB for a while, then they went to a pay service (and dwindled from there sadly, I remember when the dev's stated it would never be a pay-for software, they lost quite a bit of community, many of which went to...), then went to SMF.  SMF is essentially the latest version of YaBBse.  Features are wonderful (IPB level when I started using it, now above it), the modification systems is the most simple of any I've seen anywhere (phpBB's is about the worst I've seen).  Has a converter to convert a phpBB(2) database to SMF (always make backups of course) so you would not lose anything.  Been using it for years, know it inside and out if you need any help with trying it.  I'd say install it on your server in a different directory, have it create a new DB from the DB of this phpBB board (the converter does not touch the phpBB db beyond reading it, but as always, make backups, can never have too many, I make a nightly snapshot of my site), and give it a whirl before you try to convert the main forums.

So, yes, I recommend SMF.  Well, I recommend about 10 others above phpBB, just SMF is at the top of my list.

(Also, if phpBB has a mod log like SMF, you've seen that I've already deleted some spam-posts...)

pjcast: I'll install SMF if you'd like. I think I have all the needed passwords, etc.

Unfortunately, it doesn't look like we can migrate the posts or the users over.

edit: Never mind, it looks like we can migrate: http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?board=133.0

Why on earth are you looking all over the net when the converter is on the main download page at the main SMF site anyway. :P

I've installed quite a few SMF sites if you want help.  I've got to the point that it can be up about a minute after I manage to upload everything over my slow (512kb/sec) connection.  If importing the phpbb2 db, add the time related to that then (remember, it only reads from the phpbb2 db, not write, so you can try before you switch, but as always, make backups, and you better make backups, or let me do it, with how often I'm saying it :) ).

Yeah, I suppose a switch would be good. Mysterycoder, if you have all the permissions (I can't recall if I gave you the ability to create databases) go for it. But of course, make it as a subdirectory of the webroot for testing right now (and don't post the name in open forum ;). I will download a quick database backup right now, just in case anything goes wrong.

Oh! You're right, I don't have the ability to create databases.
Perhaps you could send me the password?

And no, I won't post the name of the forum here.

Every time I come here I end up deleting more posts, gah...

You could just share the phpBB DB, give the SMF one a proper prefix and all is good and non-conflicting.

Heh, the same is true of the Ogre forums, I have deleted countless posts/accounts... and, there are also a dozen or so other mods/admins who do the same :(

Yea, I stopped frequenting the Ogre boards thanks to phpBB.  phpBB is a freakin hassle in trying to stay up to date with hundreds of threads (a few reasons, main being that I usually can't catch up in one sitting, and when you leave then phpBB marks everything unread, even when it is not) and I just did not want to deal with it.  There are few enough posts here it is not too big of a deal for that, so I still come.

I have my quick-reply back, oh thank you, not to mention no more pages where all it says is that you posted then redirects a few seconds later, such a waste.

Site seems a bit slow though, just one of the hickups (as sometimes happens here I've noticed)?

Make sure to install the advanced captcha mod in the package manager, and to configure it in the registration section, captcha subsection.

EDIT:  And what is with the «Flagged as spam» at the top of my post?
